Rigged Racing: Post Jam and Jam Results

Hey all,

GMTK Jam is over but that is not the case for Rigged Racing just yet! I did some tuning during the rating period but was too busy the whole weekend to push them online. Let's cover them before we go into the results and my thoughts.

  • [Fixed] the lingering "regenerate map button." You're not supposed to use it mid-race.
  • [Fixed] how the racers are scaled by the area they are in.
  • [Added] a speed up button you can use during the race.
    • Also [adjusted] the racer speed and stamina consumption
  • [Replaced] the short repetitive tune with TWO different tracks.
    • And [added] required UI components to "Help" window to control them.

I feel these changes enhance the experience and make it even more enjoyable. Still, there are things I would like to resolve as well. Two major ones in fact. First, the UI is pretty raw still visually. All the panels use the default Godot gray and the stamina bars are just white texture, no good. These are features that I believe can be handled with relative ease. Second, you might have noticed the gold counter in top right. But there is no real function to it yet, outside of it going up and down with the results. I would like to complete this game loop so players have something to aim for - or avoid. Personally I don't mind the sandbox style it currently has and will probably leave it in some form or another.

So to summarize, I would like to still do the following:

  1. Add the missing graphics
  2. Complete the gameplay with some proper ending(s)

One extra thing I wanted to implement during the jam was obstacles you would place in building phase. Those would have come with more racer properties and extra layer to navigate and strategize with. Sadly, this didn't get in the game. I might give it a thought but it's more than likely to not be implemented. Just wanted to share that.

To the results!

The results of the jam can be seen below. Out of 9416 entries the game placed....

#2024 in creativity, #4536 in artwork, #5810 in enjoyment, #6801 in narrative and finally #6813 in audio.

My biggest motives for the jam were to participate to create a game, and try something different (this goes for almost every jam). I didn't have much time to fiddle with music and there is no story or narrative to go with. Exceptionally I tried "traditional" 2D art instead of going for pixel art. I wanted to add some frames but ran out of time once again. I actually "wasted" the first day trying to implement physics and more advanced AI. I'm glad I came to my senses at the end of the day.

I would say the ratings match and are in line with the expectations.

Thanks for reading and happy gaming!
